Team League Format

Club teams compete in a double round-robin league — each team match is played over multiple boards, like the 4NCL

How It Works

Team leagues are club-vs-club competitions. Each team (a named roster from a club) enters the tournament. Teams play a double round-robin — every team meets every other team twice (home and away). When two teams meet, they play a team match over several boards at once — one chess game per board.

Club Teams

Teams belong to clubs. A club organiser sets up rosters; the captain enters the team and picks a squad for the tournament.

Boards per Match

Typically 4 boards (configurable). Board 1 = strongest player, board 4 = fourth strongest. All boards in a team match start together.

Double Round-Robin

Each pair of teams plays twice. In the return fixture, home and away are swapped.

Captain Enters

One captain registers the whole team. Squad members are notified. Lineups are frozen when the league starts, not at entry.

Tournament Structure

From league table down to individual games

Team League Tournament
└─ Round-robin of teams (double cycle)
└─ Team match / encounter (Team A vs Team B)
└─ Board 1 — strongest vs strongest
└─ Board 2
└─ Board 3 … Board B
└─ Each board = one normal chess game (clocks, moves, result)
Teams, not individuals — you join as a team entry; there is no individual "Join" button on a team league.
Sequential phases — like individual leagues, team matches in a phase must all finish before the next phase begins.
Home white on all boards — the home team plays White on every board in that fixture; colours flip in the return leg.

Entering a Team League

  1. Club organiser creates the team league (which clubs may enter, boards, scoring, prizes).
  2. Team captain selects their team and picks a squad of 1–B players from the team roster (B = boards per match).
  3. If there is an entry fee, it is debited from the team's team balance (funded by the club financier beforehand).
  4. When the league starts, the squad is sorted by rating into board order and frozen for the season.
  5. Squad members receive a message when entered. They play their board games as those fixtures come up in the schedule.

Minimum squad size is 1 player — empty boards count as automatic forfeits at start.

Two Layers of Scoring

Board points (games) and match points (team vs team)

Board points (per game)

Win
1
Draw
½
Loss
0

Summed across all boards in a team match. Also used for the optional player prize pool.

Match points (per team match)

Win match
2
Draw match
1
Lose match
0

Awarded to the team that wins more boards (defaults — organisers can configure). The league table is usually ranked by match points, then board points.

Example: Team A beats Team B 2½–1½ on boards → Team A gets 2 match points and Team B gets 0 (or 1 each if drawn on boards — depending on configured match-draw rule).

Tournament Calculations

How many team matches and board games to expect

Example: 8 teams, 4 boards per match, double round-robin

MetricFormulaExample (8 teams, 4 boards)
Team matches (total)T × (T − 1)8 × 7 = 56 encounters
Phases (approx.)2(T − 1)2 × 7 = 14 phases
Board games (total)T × (T − 1) × B56 × 4 = 224 games
Games per team2(T − 1) × B14 × 4 = 56 games
Team matches per team2(T − 1)14 (each opponent twice)

Odd team counts add byes in the team round-robin (one team sits out that phase), same idea as individual leagues.

Example Team Match

Hammersmith Knights vs Cardiff Castles — 4 boards

BoardHome (White)Away (Black)Result
1Alice (2180)Eve (2175)1–0
2Bob (2100)Frank (2090)½–½
3Carol (2050)Grace (2040)0–1
4Dan (1980)Henry (1970)1–0
Board score
Home 2½ – 1½ Away
Match points
Home 2 – 0 Away (home wins the match)

Prizes & Entry Fees

Paid team leagues can split the prize pool between a team pool and a player pool:

  • Team pool — paid to team balances by final team standings; club financier redistributes to members.
  • Player pool — paid to personal wallets by board-point totals across the league.

Entry fees are charged per team (from the team balance), not from each player individually. Organisers may add extra prize funding from their personal wallet when creating the league.

League Table & Tiebreaks

Teams are ranked primarily by match points (configurable to board points). When teams are tied on the primary metric, the secondary metric (board points or match points) is used.

Advanced tie-breaks (Buchholz, etc.) are not used in v1 — tied positions share pooled prize percentages where applicable.
